Cat Dental Disease: Prevention, Signs, and Treatment

Dental disease affects over 70% of cats over age 3 and is one of the most common health problems in cats.

Why It Matters

Untreated dental disease causes chronic pain and can lead to bacteria entering the bloodstream, affecting kidneys, heart, and liver.

Signs

  • Bad breath
  • Difficulty chewing or dropping food
  • Drooling, pawing at mouth
  • Red or bleeding gums
  • Weight loss

FORL — Tooth Resorption

Extremely painful erosions of tooth structure. Very common in cats. Requires dental X-ray and extraction to treat.

Prevention

  • Toothbrushing: daily ideal, 3x weekly minimum
  • Dental treats and diets designed to reduce tartar
  • Annual dental checks at the vet
