Why Is My Cat Hiding? Reasons and When to Worry

Hiding is natural for cats but can signal illness.

Normal Reasons

  • Stress or change in environment
  • Loud noises
  • Overstimulation
  • Sleep (cats sleep 12-16 hours daily)

When to Worry

Sudden or prolonged hiding combined with: not eating for 24+ hours, changes in litter box habits, laboured breathing, or visible pain.

Medical Causes

Pain, dental disease, UTI, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, cancer. Cats hide weakness instinctively.
