CBD Oil for Dogs: Evidence, Benefits, and Safety
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the fastest-growing supplements in the pet industry. Here is what the science actually says.
What Is CBD?
CBD is a non-psychoactive compound derived from hemp (Cannabis sativa). It does not cause intoxication. THC is the psychoactive compound — quality CBD products contain less than 0.3% THC.
Evidence-Based Benefits in Dogs
- Osteoarthritis pain: a Cornell University study showed significant pain reduction and improved mobility in dogs with OA
- Epilepsy: a University of Colorado study showed CBD reduced seizure frequency in epileptic dogs
- Anxiety: owner-reported improvements in noise phobia and generalised anxiety
How CBD Works
CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system — a regulatory system dogs (and humans) have that influences pain, inflammation, mood, and immune function.
Dosing
Start low: 0.1-0.2mg per kg body weight twice daily. Increase gradually if needed. Therapeutic doses studied: 2-4mg/kg twice daily for pain and epilepsy.
Safety
Generally well-tolerated. Most common side effect: mild sedation at high doses. Never give products containing THC above 0.3%.
