How Much Does Spaying a Dog or Cat Cost? Europe Guide

Spaying is one of the most important decisions for a female pet's health. Here is what it costs and why it is worth it.

What Is Spaying?

Surgical removal of the ovaries (and usually the uterus) to prevent reproduction, eliminate seasons/heat cycles, and provide significant health benefits.

Cost by Country

  • UK dogs: £250–£600 depending on size
  • UK cats: £150–£300
  • Germany dogs: €300–€700
  • Germany cats: €200–€400
  • Spain dogs: €150–€400
  • Spain cats: €80–€200
  • Netherlands dogs: €250–€500
  • France dogs: €250–€550

Why Size Affects Price

Larger dogs require more anaesthetic, longer surgery time, larger suture materials, and longer monitoring. A Great Dane spay costs significantly more than a Chihuahua spay.

Health Benefits

  • Eliminates risk of pyometra (potentially fatal uterine infection)
  • Dramatically reduces risk of mammary tumours if done before first season
  • Eliminates ovarian and uterine cancer
  • No more heat cycles or unwanted pregnancy risk

When to Spay

Recommendations vary by breed and size. Most vets recommend spaying cats before first season (around 4-6 months). For dogs, timing is more nuanced — discuss with your vet based on your dog's breed and size.
