How to Read Cat Body Language

Cats communicate volumes through body language. Learning to read it transforms your relationship.

Tail Signals

  • Tail held high: confident, happy
  • Tail puffed up: frightened or very agitated
  • Tail lashing side to side: irritated, overstimulated
  • Tail wrapped around you: affection

Ear Signals

  • Forward: interested, happy
  • Sideways (airplane ears): anxious
  • Flat back: frightened or aggressive

Eye Signals

  • Slow blink: contentment and trust (blink back to communicate the same)
  • Dilated pupils: excited, frightened, or in dim light
  • Hard stare: challenge or threat

The Slow Blink

Research has confirmed that slow blinking at cats increases approach behaviour. It is genuinely a sign of trust and affection in cat communication.
