Pet Proofing Your Home: Safety Checklist for Dogs and Cats

Our homes are full of hazards that are invisible to new pet owners. A thorough pet-proof is essential before bringing a new dog or cat home.

Toxic Plants to Remove

  • Lilies (all species — highly toxic to cats, can cause fatal kidney failure)
  • Azalea and rhododendron
  • Yew
  • Foxglove
  • Oleander
  • Dieffenbachia (dumb cane)

Kitchen Hazards

  • Xylitol (in sugar-free gum, some peanut butters, baked goods) — highly toxic to dogs
  • Grapes and raisins — toxic to dogs
  • Onion and garlic — toxic to dogs and cats
  • Chocolate
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Alcohol

Household Hazards

  • Medications left out (human NSAIDs are toxic to pets)
  • Cleaning products
  • Essential oil diffusers (toxic to cats)
  • String, thread, rubber bands (intestinal obstruction in cats)
  • Electrical cords

Securing the Home

  • Baby gates for areas off-limits to puppies
  • Secure bins with lids
  • Lock away chemicals
  • Ensure windows have secure screens
