Tick Prevention in Dogs: Lyme Disease and Other Risks

Ticks transmit serious diseases. Prevention is far better than treatment.

Diseases Ticks Transmit

  • Lyme disease: joint pain, fever, kidney disease
  • Anaplasmosis: fever, lethargy, joint pain
  • Babesiosis: destroys red blood cells, can be fatal

Prevention Products

  • Oral: NexGard, Bravecto, Simparica
  • Spot-on: Frontline Plus, Advantix
  • Collar: Seresto 8-month protection

Tick Checks

After every walk in long grass or woodland: check ears, between toes, groin, armpits, under collar. Use a tick hook — twist anticlockwise to remove whole tick.
