Arthritis in Cats: The Condition That Is Often Missed
Arthritis in cats is extremely common — but frequently missed because cats hide pain and don't limp in the way dogs do.
How Common Is Feline Arthritis?
Studies using X-rays show that 61% of cats over 6 years and 82% of cats over 14 years have X-ray evidence of arthritis. Yet it is massively under-reported.
Signs — Different From Dogs
- Reluctance to jump up or down from furniture
- Choosing lower sleeping spots
- Reduced grooming (especially back end and tail)
- Hesitation at stairs
- Reduced interaction and play
- Missing the litter box (can't step over high sides comfortably)
Treatment
- Solensia (frunevetmab): monthly injection, specifically licensed for feline arthritis pain. Highly effective.
- Meloxicam: NSAID liquid, effective but requires regular monitoring in cats
- Weight management
- Environmental modification: ramps, lower litter boxes, softer bedding
Environmental Modification
Low-entry litter boxes, ramps to favourite perches, and soft warm bedding significantly improve comfort and quality of life.
