Probiotics for Dogs: What the Evidence Says
Probiotics are one of the most popular supplements for dogs. But do they work?
What Are Probiotics?
Live bacteria and yeasts that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer health benefits on the host. Different strains have different effects.
Evidence-Based Benefits in Dogs
- Reducing duration of acute diarrhoea
- Supporting recovery after antibiotic treatment
- Reducing stress-associated GI symptoms
- Supporting immune function
- Some evidence for atopic dermatitis improvement
Strains That Work in Dogs
Not all probiotics are equal. Research-supported strains for dogs include: Enterococcus faecium SF68, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bacillus coagulans, and Bifidobacterium animalis.
What to Look For on Labels
- Specific strain listed (not just species)
- CFU count (colony-forming units) — minimum 1 billion per dose
- Guaranteed viability through expiry date
- Dog-specific product
Human Probiotics for Dogs?
Human probiotics are not ideal for dogs as canine gut microbiome differs. Dog-specific products are preferable.
