Border Collie: Health, Exercise and Mental Stimulation

Border Collies are the world's most intelligent dog breed — and one of the most demanding to keep well.

Exercise Requirements

Minimum 2 hours of vigorous exercise daily. Without adequate stimulation, they develop destructive or obsessive behaviours.

Mental Stimulation Is Non-Negotiable

Physical exercise alone is not enough. Border Collies need: puzzle feeders, agility training, advanced obedience, scent work.

Common Health Issues

  • Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Epilepsy
  • Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome

MDR1 Gene

Many herding breeds carry a mutation making them sensitive to certain medications including ivermectin. Always inform your vet before any medication.
