Dog Heat Stroke: Prevention, Signs, and Emergency Treatment

Heat stroke is life-threatening in dogs. Body temperature above 41C causes organ damage within minutes.

Signs

  • Excessive rapid panting
  • Drooling heavily
  • Red or pale gums
  • Weakness or collapse
  • Vomiting, seizures

Emergency Treatment

  1. Move to cool shaded area
  2. Apply cool (not ice cold) water to neck, armpits, groin
  3. Fan to increase evaporation
  4. Offer small sips of cool water
  5. Call vet immediately

Prevention

  • Never leave in parked cars
  • Walk in early morning or evening
  • Always provide fresh water and shade
