Why Do Cats Sleep on You? The Science Behind This Behaviour

If your cat chooses to sleep on you rather than in their own bed, you should feel honoured — there are specific reasons cats do this.

Warmth

The most practical reason: you are a heat source. Cats have a higher body temperature than humans (38-39°C) and love warmth. Your body radiates heat throughout the night, making you an excellent sleeping spot.

Security and Trust

Cats only sleep deeply when they feel safe. Choosing to sleep on you — in a vulnerable state — indicates trust. In multi-cat households, cats often sleep touching a bonded companion. You are their bonded companion.

Your Scent

Your unique scent is associated with safety, food, and comfort. Sleeping where your scent is strongest reinforces the bond and provides psychological comfort.

Heartbeat and Breathing Rhythm

Kittens sleep pressed against their mother, soothed by her heartbeat. Adult cats often retain this association. The regular rhythm of your breathing and heartbeat is calming.

Territory Marking

Cats have scent glands in their paws and face. Sleeping on you deposits their scent — marking you as belonging to them. This is a compliment.

When to Redirect

If sleeping with your cat disrupts your sleep or if they sleep on your face (blocking airways), redirect them with a heated cat bed placed close to you rather than on you.
