Dog Humping: Causes and How to Reduce It
Mounting behaviour in dogs is embarrassing for owners but is often not sexual in nature at all.
Common Causes
- Sexual behaviour in intact (unneutered) dogs
- Play and social behaviour in puppies
- Excitement and overstimulation
- Stress response
- Compulsive behaviour
- Attention-seeking (if owner reacts dramatically)
Does Neutering Help?
Neutering reduces hormonally-driven mounting significantly. However, learned behaviour established before neutering may persist. Neutering is not a guaranteed cure if the behaviour is well established.
How to Reduce Mounting
- Interrupt early with a calm, neutral cue (not excited or angry)
- Redirect to an appropriate activity (sit, toy play)
- Reduce arousal levels — break up play sessions before over-excitement peaks
- Ensure adequate exercise
- Consult a vet if compulsive
